RE: New Driver's Licence in Ontario June 16th 08

Spoke to an MTO Officer today as they were weighing Dump truck for over weight. Two questions I wanted answered. 1. Which weight is used for the 4600Kgs to have an 'A' licence 2. medical requirements on an 'A' R licence. Answers: 1. The GVWR is used and what is stamped on the trailer (Unless the trailer is obviously misweighed then it would be weighed) and 2. Same as the regular 'A'.

RE: Any one using a Ford V10 for TV?

We had a V-10 until a month ago and have now towed with both the Diesel and the V-10. Our last truck was a Ford F250 V-10 with the 4;30 rear and had no problem towing our fiver up hills but it was a gas hog. We did get a respectable 8.7 miles to the gallon when towing and on a good day got about 10.5 without towing. We decided to look at the diesel's for longevity of the engine and the extra miles per gallon towing and not towing. Even now with the Diesel we are still ahead of the game in miles per gallon towing and not. Just took a trip to see family in NH as we do every year with our fiver. Compared last years gas usage to this years diesel usage and we used 35 gallons less fuel with the diesel. Even with the $1.00 a gallon difference in fuel we still saved money and it was a more comfortable ride not listening to the engine of the V-10 sucking down the gas on hills. No matter what you get..a V-10 or a diesel you will have the power and the torque to pull your unit without problem. Get what you feel you can afford and what works for YOU. As for us..its now Diesel all the way just for the extra mileage and comfort in the pulling.

RE: Doing our part to help the economy

butkus21 CONGRATS on your luck in getting a great deal on a unit some of us can only dream about and in the process you helped a friend..what a GREAT thing to do for yourself and your friend who needed a little help in his time of need. Wish others would stop busting your bubble and being so negitive about how you got your new unit..I bet if they had the chance they would have done the same thing and helped a friend in need if they could afford it. If they say otherwise...then shame on them. JMHO

RE: New Driver's Licence in Ontario June 16th 08

Hey skip good to see you.......the 4600kgs (approx 10,000 lbs)is the GVWR not what the trailer actually weighs. The potential is there. I don't have a problem doing the test to get an 'A' licence. My problem is, for the ten times I take the 5er out every year I have to pay for a medical. I'm hoping that the MOT in their great wisdom LOLOLOLOL sees this aspect of the 'A' licence requirement, and takes that part out.

New Driver's Licence in Ontario June 16th 08

So what does everyone think about the new 'A' Drivers licence with an 'R' restriction for vehicles pulling a trailer over 4500 KGs or 10000 LBs???????

RE: NORTHWOOD STANDS ON THEIR UNITS BUT NOT BEHIND THEM!

We had a problem with our last units walls and like the OP we had lines every 4 feet down the sides of our unit. The Dealer called the manufacturer and they took the unit back and replaced all sides of our unit..Sounds great? Think again. When our unit was returned it looked GREAT on the outside and even the new molding on the inside looked really nice..except for the bedroom area. After sitting in our yard for 2 weeks I came back from a trip only to find that the front cap and sidewalls were pulled away from each other and there was a 1/2 to 1 inch gap between them in the seams on both sides. We now have a different unit because it was told to us that the frame had been damaged some how and we would NOT allow them to fix it we wanted what we sent in to come back to us in better not worse condition. They stood behind their product and we stood behind them seeings how this was our 4th Palomino product and we now have our 5th Palomino with No problems. Be careful what you wish for. If its cosmetic like ours was you might want to learn to live with it and see what can be done or you could end up with something worse than when you sent it to them.

RE: Sabre by Palomino

jello..check out the forum in my signature and go to the Palomino section. There are people there that own Puma's and Sabre's as well and they seem to all enjoy their units.

RE: length of 5th wheel

Sounds like the dealerships salesman is trying to get rid of something that not to many people will be buying for awhile. The larger units will more than likely be sitting on the lots for awhile with the price of gas and diesel. With the added weight of the larger units you are going to be over your GVWR on your TV so just make sure its something you can live with. JMHO but with the added slides some of the smaller units say 28 to 34 foot have more room than some of the single slide larger units that weigh alot more.

RE: Downsizing abit

1. Rear kitchen puts the weight on the rear of the fiver..lowering Pin weight in the front..check out RK models and look at the pin weights. (makes it lighter weight on pin and some trucks need this little bit of help by saving about 200 to 400 lbs on pin weight) 2. When slide is in we can still use the kitchen and dinning area, just have to open the fridge door a little less..about a foot from the slide. All depends on how close slide is to fridge. 3. Only time had anything move was when we traveled over a road that was being torn up and repaved. We make sure that we use the non-skid shelf liner and that all items are secure where stored. Once done we just put things back where they came from and no worries. 4. See our sig and notice that the door is Mid and not rear on our fiver? Don't know of any that have the door and kitchen in the back but we haven't been in all makes so this could be true..but not the norm. 5. We have owned the rear living room and center kitchen and have not had things break in either...just preference in what you like.

RE: Downsizing abit

You might want to look at a rear kitchen setup .(reason we have rear kitchen is because of the extra counter space) they have more counter space and with the kitchen in the back there is more livingroom space in the middle. All of the manufacturers have a RK model and in the lenght you want and with a single slide or up to 4 slides..its your choice. Look for a manufacturer that you like and check out their models. Good luck in your search.

RE: Which do you prefer?

We take one trip a year to see Family in the states and even then we don't stay at the same campground as they are at. We do try and spread out our time with different family members but it is nice to go back to our bed and just relax when we need to be left alone. Don't get me wrong..we love the family just in small doses cause everyone seem's to think they are more important than the next person. We do love to travel and see the sights and we do this alone without other rv'ers..easier pace and less time trying to talk the other into doing what we like to do or they like to do. We have stayed in the same campground as the inlaws for a month last year..next sight over..and that changed this year..stayed on the other side of the campground..worked out much better. Do you know how hard it is to tell someone who's 80 years old that you want to just relax and watch TV for the night or that you want to cook your own food and eat it when You want to? It's pretty hard when your trying to not get upset so easier to just not go there. JMHO but my vote is for Going on our own and enjoying the time together.

RE: Sabre by Palomino

jello there is also the Thoroughbred by Palomino as you can see in our sig. We started out with the Puma fiver and moved to the Thoroughbred because its a bigger RV but lighter weight. All in all good product and if you have the right dealership behind you then you should have no problems if any warranty work is needed. Also so you know, Palomino was purchased by Forest River a couple years ago but other than that its still the same company that stands behind its products and has for years. RE: Thanks Mobilife!

We had our Reese hitch taken out of our old truck and put into our new truck by them and I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone wanting a fair price for good work. Other place's here in the area (Kitchener & Stratford) wanted upwards of $700 to take it out of one truck and put into another truck. Mobilelife told us that it would take a couple days to get the new bolt kit ordered and that it would only be $450 plus tax. The other dealership's said it would take about 6 hours to put the hitch back in and Mobilelife said it would only be about 2 to 3 hours. They did a great job and in the least amount of time and money and were great to deal with. GREAT JOB MOBILELIFE RV ...Keep up the good work and customer service.

RE: 5"s out of level?

One option..find a different site that is Level. The other option is drive the truck up on boards while backing in as you did the fiver and release it from that height. Then drive off the boards and enjoy the rest of your trip. Just remember to put those same boards back when you rehitch to leave so that its back to a level playing field. JMHO Dawn

RE: Is my new slider hitch installed wrong??

rheo1 Just my 2 cents worth but we own a shortbed and a Reese 16k slider hitch that was taken out of our 99 and put in our 2005. We have had on a couple occasions just to be on the safe side of losing a window or doing damage to our fiver used the slider back position. If at all possible is there any way you can exchange your new hitch for a different brand? Do a search on the different one's first and check out where they are installed in the bed of your truck. This should help you in finding one that will install in the Correct area of your bed. Its easier to replace a hitch then it is to shave off a couple inches here and there from the front cap of your fiver. JMHO for what its worth...get a different slider hitch and save yourself headaches.

RE: Concerto stereo system in Cardinal Fifth Wh not working

Just had our Concertone TV and Surround Sound system replaced under warranty and it was only used for a month. Was told that it will only carry the remainder of the factory warranty left on our unit then its just a wait and see thing. Was told that if our unit only had 2 days left and the TV and Surround was replaced it would only be covered for the remaining 2 days. Guess its a wait and see game now. Good Luck..they are made by a company (concertone) that is owned by Forest River so they could care less ( was told this buy service manager)

We own a the fiver in our signature and we tow it with a 3/4 no problem. Here are the spec's for these ultra lightweight fivers. RE: Our dog was cut open on here side

Here is one more thing to check on your rv if you use the spring loaded pin's on the legs. Our sheltie (Sadie) came in from outside last winter and layed down beside me on the floor next to my chair. When I went to pat her on her side I felt something very warm and wet and my hand was no longer on fur. When I looked down my had was on the inside of her skin on her ribcage. Needless to say I was in shock and could do nothing but yell to my husband to call the Vet we had an emergency. Put a towel on her side and husband took her to the vets where they operated on her and removed some jagged skin that was torn off. She had a Gash 10 inches long from the top of her shoulder to just under her leg on the front. It took them a couple hours to stitch her up and for us to get there to pick her up and take her back home. When we went out side to find out what she had been hurt on we found out the hard way that the handles on the pin's to our fiver's legs were very very sharp and that her hair was still on the one pin handle. She is the type of dog who loves to run out the door to see if there are birds or squirrels in the yard to chase and she would run past the Rv and Truck full steam ahead, except this time she must have gotten stuck on the pin and continued to run and rip her skin. We were leaving the following week for a trip to Florida for a month and the Vet said as long as we knew where a vet was when we got there then it was ok to take her with us, so off to Florida we went with our 4 legged kids. We had to put a T shirt on her to keep her skin clean and changed it every day to keep her wound clean. She was known as the Fashionable Sheltie in the park and every day when we took the dogs for a walk people would stop and comment on how cute she was with her different shirts. Little did they know that she was bald and had a bad gash on her side. We now PLACE A SPLIT Tennis ball over the leg pins to insure that if something or someone makes contact with the handles they will not get hurt. A simple fix and one we wont go without again. As for the door we will be checking that when we get our fiver back from the dealer and fix that as well if needed for everyone's safety. Thanks for the information any and all safety precautions are appreciated.

RE: Olevia TV

Call the dealership where you purchased your Bighorn from and report the problem to them. If its something wrong with the TV and your still under warrany then they should replace it free of charge. If its not under warranty then maybe they can suggest a fix or like us you could replace it with another brand of TV and forget the headaches that will come with dealing with the problems. JMHO
